Chilli Con Carne with Mushrooms

These days chilli con carne is often prepared with minced meat beef, but the original Mexican dish was traditionally made with cubes or strips of steak.

    Method

    1. Heat the oil in a heavy-based saucepan. Cut the steak into strips or cubes and fry until golden brown.
    2. Add the onions and garlic and sauté until soft, adding more oil if required.
    3. Add all the remaining ingredients and simmer for about 15 minutes.
    4. Serve warm with pasta or rice or as a filling in pancakes or tortillas.
