The South African beef industry is on the brink of a transformative year in 2024 with the approval of beef exports to Saudi Arabia, marking the end of a two-decade pause. This groundbreaking development has injected renewed optimism into the industry, setting the stage for robust growth in the coming year. Key players, including the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, and industry leader KARAN BEEF, collaborated to bring this historic opportunity to fruition.

"While the local beef market remains resilient, we see vast opportunities on the global stage. Our commitment remains local, and our goal is to drive industry growth, create employment, and stimulate the South African economy by expanding our export footprint. Opening new markets, especially in Saudi Arabia, presents growth prospects not only for KARAN BEEF but also for local commercial cattle farmers." Says Matthew Karan, Director of KARAN BEEF.

“While we, as KARAN BEEF, endeavour to broaden our export horizons, we remain committed in prioritising and nurturing our local market, viewing exports as supplementary growth avenues while remaining steadfast in our commitment to the local South African market.” Continues Karan.

With a legacy spanning over 50 years, KARAN BEEF has consistently set the standard for quality and the excellence of South African beef worldwide. Matthew Karan declared, "For our business and our communities to thrive, the entire beef production industry must flourish."

Having successfully expanded globally, KARAN BEEF is now poised to make a significant impact in the Gulf Countries (GCC), with a strategic focus on the dynamic Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market. The company anticipates substantial growth in beef exports, underscoring its unwavering commitment to excellence and the elevation of South African beef on the global stage.

KARAN BEEF is actively working to open new markets for local products while developing and empowering commercial cattle farmers in South Africa to capitalise on these opportunities. Matthew Karan, an active member of the Saudi Arabia South Africa Business Council (SASABC), played a key role in engaging South Africa's Department of Agriculture, the Department of Trade & Industry, and the Government of Saudi Arabia to unlock this potentially lucrative market.

As South Africa's beef industry looks towards the promising horizon of 2024, the approval for exports to Saudi Arabia symbolises a year marked by growth, collaboration, and significant opportunities for the South African economy.
