Karan Beef plans ahead
Due to the increasing demand for Karan Beef over the past few years, our existing facilities have been put under severe pressure to meet these requirements, due to insufficient capacity. In 2006 the Karan Beef Board approved the finance required to do the necessary extensions to both the Feedlot and the Abattoir, in order to not only provide for the current needs, but also for the future demand.
Land was purchased adjacent to the current Feedlot which was ideally situated and places the existing feedmill in the middle of the enlarged Feedlot. A total of 305 new camps are currently being erected and will have the capacity to hold an additional 30,000 head of cattle when completed.
The Abattoir in Balfour has also been enlarged, which will enable us to increase our slaughter capacity of 1,000 head per day to a maximum of 1,600, as the demand increases. The cooling facilities as well as our freezing capability had to be extended substantially to meet these increased numbers, and the current loading facilities upgraded in order to efficiently handle the increased output. The existing by-product plant was also totally replaced in the upgrade process.
When the project is completed in 2008, it will create an additional 50 new positions at the Feedlot and 80 new positions at the Abattoir, which will enable Karan Beef to continue to provide our customers with the high quality service they have come to expect.
