The 2007 Cleaver Awards

The winners of the 2007 Cleaver Awards were announced at a luncheon at The Garden Court Southern Sun or OR Tambo Airport Hotel – Johannesburg.

According to Dave Ford, Chairman and spokesperson for The Red Meat Industry Forum, the feedback they received indicated that consumers expect top quality beef, a hygienic environment as well as a friendly and efficient service. As a result The Cleaver Awards were launched in 2005 to meet the needs of the consumer by raising standards amongst butchers. Initially they received 2500 entries and this has increased to 11000 entries across all 9 provinces this year, a dramatic increase showing great uptake and support by the Butchers themselves. The launch of the Awards has successfully assured the consumer that they can purchase South African Beef with confidence, as well as involved the butchers by rewarding and recognizing South Africa’s best Butchers.

The 70 Finalists were independently assessed against a 212 point checklist that met consumer expectations on criteria such as in-store hygiene, supplying quality assured roller marked SA Beef, offering the best advice as to meal preparations and cost effective ways of buying the best cuts.
